Number 9, So Glad Your Mine!

Happy Anniversary to my main man!

... to my main squeeze!

... to my partner in crime for 9 short years!

From the top of the mountain...

... to the sandy shore...

... there's NO ONE I'd want to share life with more!

It's been a wild year, my love, and today we'd probably rather be catching up on sleep than on an adventure =) But in the highs and lows you've always been my steady.

Thank you for loving me so well.

Playing Catch-up for July

Though it's already August, I need to play catch-up on all of July's events before I launch into what's been going on lately. Here we go:

Ellie's school
July brought the good news of a school place for our Ellie girl. It's at a nearby Church of England school and we've been very pleased with it so far. She's slotted to start Year 1 in September and the school let Ellie participate in the last week or so of school activities just to get a feel of things. I even took her along on a school field trip... and I'll just say teachers are my HEROES. I wasn't even an "official" helper and I slept well that night!
Yes, they have uniforms - Hooray!
Ellie's first day of visiting
"Hot" weather
It's been hot (you know... for England) and so we've tried to spend lots of time outdoors. Our 1st floor (or 2nd floor in US terms) flat can get a little steamy without AC in the afternoon sun - but 80 degrees and sunny with a breeze feels pretty nice outside!
I found the poor girls sweating in their beds at night!
Sweet Little Sweaty Sleeper
Nana & Grandbud
Robert's parents came for a visit and it was oh so wonderful to have them.
They held babies...
... played at the park ...
... rode the tube in for some city sight-seeing ...
... went shopping and venturing with us ...
... and told stories at bedtime every night!
We did many more things together also - lots of talking and praying and playing. It was such a sweet, memorable time. Our only disappointment was their departure.

Date Nights
At the top of the short list of things we miss from our "old lives" is Date Night. As in, I think we've been on 2 this year... that is, before parents came to visit! We enjoyed a lovely long date (to a local pub and then dessert at an Italian place) while my mom was here. Then we squeezed in 2 more dates while Nana & Grandbud were here. For one we went back to that same Italian place for dinner and the next we pounded some Baskin & Robbins... mmmmm...
Date-starved dreamy faces at Zizzi's Restaurant
Meg's Early Birthday
Birthdays are always better with family, right? Well, our sweet Nana brought all the trimmings for a fun early birthday party for our Meg who turns 4 at the end of September.
We made & decorated cupcakes!
Birthday Dinner
Birthday girl about to blow out her candles
Opening presents
Church picnic
We had a blast this month at our church's annual picnic in Hyde Park.
We all played tug-of-war, even the kiddos!
Looks like someone's down for the count... and I think Robert is about to stomp on him!
Ellie became a butterfly
It's always a successful event when this happens!
July 4th
I'm not going to even try to sugar coat our July 4th... it was pretty sad. I spent most of the day envious of our friends BBQing, Beaching and Fireworking. I don't recommend this approach :) I would recommend an event more like our friends Erin & Nate in Guatemala - read about it here! We ended up with a bucket of KFC and some National Anthem ala Whitney Houston (her version is just TOUGH to beat! Girl's got some pipes.)
It's no secret... we love KFC.
Grocery delivery
If you've made it this far on this long post, I have to tell you about what has truly kept me going the past 2 months. 2 words: Grocery. Delivery. Y'all, where has Grocery Delivery been all of my mothering life??? In the quiet of the evening I order exactly what I want online and they bring it to my house at a time of my choosing... !!! Though Ellie & Meg are pretty super these days in the grocery, I acutely remember those baby days when Ellie was OVER sitting the cart, Meg had blown straight through her diaper, and I just - oops - dropped 5 cans of tomatoes out of my overflowing cart, and we need to leave NOW because Meg was hungry 30 minutes ago and the lady in front of me has 5,000 coupons... !!! I'm so glad I haven't had to survive the grocery now that little Samantha is here. Grocery Delivery, I love you dearly.

Hopefully I'll get a post up soon of all that's been happening this week (Taster: we're away from London in a beautiful part of the country while Robert's on a preaching assignment...).

Reflecting on Loss

As I rock my newborn baby girl back to sleep after an early morning feed, my mind goes back to this day a year ago when we said good-bye to our sweet little one as I miscarried in my first trimester. There had been a healthy ultrasound on Monday, but come Friday morning there were some troubling signs and the nurse said we should come in.

I didn't need the ultrasound tech to tell me there was no heartbeat. I knew the moment I looked at the screen. And we went next door to the hospital for that final procedure. I left that hospital where I birthed 2 precious baby girls, only this time my arms were empty.

And I felt empty. Losing the baby never made me ask the "why" questions for some reason. I knew these things happen, why shouldn't they happen to me? I was just left with a deep sadness. My grief, honestly, surprised me. Oh, how I wanted to hold that baby. I still do. And for all the healing and restoration that has come through Samantha's pregnancy and birth, there's no replacement for the longing of that life. That precious one.

And my grief further surprised me in the way that - though there was this great sadness - there was also a sense of gratitude because I never felt God had left me. Indeed, He was so gentle, channeling comfort my way through my time with Him and friends and family. My sister just happened to be coming through my city the very next day. We were living with another caring family at the time and 2 weeks later we were with my parents - needless to say, I didn't have to worry much with cooking & cleaning. There was also the church service I didn't want to go to so soon after - but did, and found great comfort through other women there and freedom to grieve in worship. And, of course, I had my precious family, Robert and Ellie and Meg.

There was this undercurrent of love in the midst hardship. It doesn't make you want to throw a party, but it does anchor you in the storm. And now a year later, God has been faithful in His presence still. We'd found out on Father's Day that we were expecting and even this little detail has been a comfort to me because of the joy I remember feeling taking that test and surprising Robert with the news that he'd be a father once again.

Ellie just two days ago said, "You know, Mom, if you'd had the other baby that died, we'd have 6 people in our family... but I guess we will... when we get to heaven. We'll have 6 then!" And the innocent and matter-of-fact way that she talks about these things is beautiful to me.

And she's right. Our lives are short, and sometimes very short for the one that would have made us 6. But short or shorter, life is precious and our souls are eternal and I look forward in faith to praising our Savior together... all 6 of us.

1 Year Down, 1 To Go!

Robert just turned in his last paper to complete his first year of study at LTS!

Woo Hoo! We're celebrating today with some burgers!

And, as a proud wife, I must say he did great (and his marks reflect this!)! He hit the books hard this year - and for a man that would always pick ultimate frisbee with students over time in the library, being in the books was not always easy. But blessing after blessing has come through this intensive time of studying the Bible and theology. It has been such a gift to be able to set aside this time in our lives to focus his attention and energy to preparing for a future in pastoral ministries.

And I feel like I am learning so much right along with him as Robert has been wise in sharing with me all he's pondering and learning. Here's an excerpt from this last paper that details some of Robert's thoughts prayers leading up to the decision to move to England:

When I first began to read for and think through this assignment, I thought of the years 2011-2012. Between the Fall of 2011 and the Spring of 2012, God was preparing my heart to be ready to move my family across the ocean to England for the purpose of Christian ministry! How did He do it? One day I randomly ordered “One Year Book of Christian History.” This book had a profound impact on my life because every day I read amazing stories about men and women throughout church history that had dedicated their lives to spreading the gospel — most of their lives were marked by extreme suffering and trials. My heart was deeply moved as I read about these suffering saints and how the Lord used them to advance the gospel. Reading these stories prepared my heart and mind to be ready for what God was going to call my family to do later that year - move to England, away from all our friends, family, a great job, and a life of comfort we had built. And through reading these stories, listening to sermons, and meditating on Scripture, I knew that committing to full-time ministry meant putting me AND my family in the path of suffering and trials in a more intense way than before. God had prepared my heart for the realism of ministry, and He also showed me His promised presence and power.

I will conclude with the main verse I have kept close to my heart through this entire transition and still do this day in preparing for my future, “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” (Acts 20:22-24).

We're so grateful to friends and family for their faithful prayers and support.

1 academic year down and just 1 more to go!

Welcome July!

Whew... is it July already?!?!

We had a crazy June. It was wonderful and exhausting, exhilarating and overwhelming.

It was our first month as a family of FIVE with the addition of this little sweetie:

June has involved lots of cuddling...

... a little bit of sleeping ...
how IS that comfortable?

... lots of Nutella to make up for lost sleep ...
Diet starts Monday (not really...)
... bunches of World Cup watching ...
A little study break for the LTS students
Apparently Samantha doubles as a candy dispenser

... 1 LTS Thanksgiving (end of year) service ...

... 2 precious weeks of Grandma time ...
Talk about a TOUGH goodbye!
... with a date night thrown in ...
We're delirious with freedom
... and even more cuddling (this really helps with the momentary exhaustion-induced despondency) ...

All that to say, we have a sweet healthy baby girl and we're so thankful to see another month with her around.

Welcome July :)

Thankfulness on Father's Day

I'm grateful today because I have an incredible Dad who protected, loved, and nurtured me as I grew and still loves and supports me in so many ways today.

I'm grateful today because I have a wonderful father-in-law who has sacrificially loved his sons and carefully guided my husband to the man he is today.

I'm grateful today because I have a heavenly Father who lavishes His love on me when I have nothing to offer that He hasn't already abundantly given.

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

I'm particularly grateful today because I'm married to this man:

Wow, he's been my champion 10 times over these past couple weeks! I don't know that we would have survived without him, seriously. He's given himself over and over again. He has completely stepped in to take care of all things at home - cooking, cleaning, taking care of Ellie & Meg, on and on...

He is also a miracle worker when it comes to getting Samantha to sleep; I'm going to start calling him the Pied Piper. Oh, and he's had to still go to class and try to fit in his studies where he can! And can I just say he looks good doing it all? He's the best looking sleep-deprived seminarian I've ever laid eyes on! I mean, I'm living with Superman over here...

... or Flash...
He's not perfect, which is good because who would want to be married to someone perfect?! Like this morning when we were all ready for church and Robert realized he'd left the keys in the car ignition draining the now-dead battery for 3 days. Even on days like this he comes to our rescue with some sweet church-at-home worship and bible lesson. What a gift he is - he keeps us (especially me!) young and laughing.

We are all counting down the minutes until Grandma gets here - but in one way I'm thankful she's not here yet because I've discovered anew what a hero I married. I've been able to see and experience the supernatural loving service of this man as we've welcomed our precious Samantha. And I've been the only person on earth to see it, which makes me feel like a special insider into these sacred moments of sacrifice. He's been a rock for ALL of his girls (and there are quite a few of us these days!).

Samantha's first walk in the park
For all these things I'm overwhelmed with thankfulness on this Father's Day.

She's Here!

Our little Samantha has arrived! We're in love to say the least.

Hers was a different birth experience than Ellie or Meg for many reasons, including that I'm in another country, I did not have to be induced (Praise God!), and I delivered in a birthing center without that lovely epidural :)

Hers was a similar birth experience to Ellie & Meg in that I'm still just pinching myself over the wonder and amazement of new life. I cry often with deep gratitude (mingled with new baby exhaustion and hormones :) for this sweet gift.

Just can't stop kissing her.

Having a photographer for a neighbor is really coming in handy!

There's lots of other things I (think) I want to say about her birth, but I thought this time I'd leave off with what - in retrospect - is a hilarious blog post I started right before I knew I was in labor (I guess the hiking worked!?!?!):

PAST DUE DATE RAMBLINGS

My due date was on Tuesday. Today is Saturday. Here are some of my Past Due Date Ramblings:

~ Some things I've tried to encourage Baby Sister to come: Tuesday I cooked Tacos and we had friends over, Wednesday did lots of cleaning, Thursday took the girls to the doctor and walked home, Friday did lots of laundry and ate some delicious & spicy chicken curry, Today we hiked all over massive park grounds near by... Tomorrow we are having an awesome street party at church and I'm telling you I will BE on that bouncy castle with my children! :)

~ I know I've successfully birthed 2 beautiful girls, but I feel like a COMPLETE first-timer with this one! I'm on this crazy cycle of googling and timing every twinge of pain I feel, deciding it's nothing, reminding myself that I MUST know when it's TIME... right?? ...

And then it was dinner time, but I couldn't really eat because my insides started screaming at me in more regular intervals. And off to the hospital we went!

So thankful for all those I know were praying for me, and continue to do so now that we're all home. God has been so gracious and tender with us.
